Valentine's Day Nail Art - Interlocking Hearts

The look I'm sharing with you today is a bit of a manicure fail. I was going for a specific look and what I got was nothing close. That said it's not a horrible manicure at all, just not what I was going for.

You know those great looking manicures with the interlocking dots? That's what I wanted to do but instead of dots, I attempted hearts. First, I tried to paint them on but my hearts looked like sideways ninja turtle heads.

Picture the rounded cheeks and bubble head. Cute but not for this manicure. Maybe I'll take this new found design idea and do a ninja turtle manicure in the future.  My 8 yr old would probably love it. Are you ready to see what I ended up with? please excuse the quick cell phone picture. I took this mid-manicure before any cleanup.

I used Orly Artificial Sweetener for my main base color and Dare to Bare for my accent nail. These two color went so well together I almost wish I hadn't added the hearts.

The heart glitters are from KBShimmer that I just received in a polish swap from the completely awesome Jessica of Be Happy and Buy Polish. I originally thought the colors of the glitters would blend a little better with the polish to give more of that interlocking look I was going for. Love the glitters but they stand out a little too much in this case.

I kind of like the way this looks but I'm disappointed that my original idea didn't work out. I'm not giving up yet though and will probably try again. I just have to figure out how I want to go about it. What are your thoughts on how this turned out? Thanks for stopping by and Happy Polishing!

  1. I think you were onto something with painting them. I would've started with the dots and turned those into hearts with a smaller dotting tool. That said the glitters look fine but I understand you were looking for a softer look.

  4. It's a fab mani. I wonder if you'd get a look closer to your original plan by using smaller glitters so they don't stick out from the nail as much?

  6. It's always a bummer when an idea doesn't pan out but what you came up with instead is really cute!

  7. LOL Sideways ninja turtle heads. It's only funny because it's cute and the way you wrote it just made me giggle.

  8. I think I'm going to try acrylic paint next time because I seem to have better control with it. I ended up making a heart on accident with my dotting tools in a previous manicure and thought I could recreate it this time around and it just didn't work. But learning is all part of the process right!

  10. I'm sure smaller glitters would have helped. I don't have any at the moment though. I also think if the colors would have matched that would have made a huge difference too. This was a good learning experience manicure for me. =)

  11. I actually used to draw them when I was little and they were popular the first time. I might have to seriously sit down and figure out how to do it on my nails.

  16. I think it looks really cute! I think we all have that thing where we think about a mani too hard or something and it doesn't come out as planned. But like I said this is really freaking adorable and cute!

  18. Thank you. I'm starting to get used to my manicures not matching what I see in my head so it's not so bad. Plus I learn from my mistakes.

  22. It's too bad your original plan didn't work out, but for what it's worth I think what you ended up with is lovely. :)

  23. It's very pretty with the subtle shimmer. I was surprised at how opaque it turned out to be. Not a 1 coater by any means but I thought I would need at least 3 coats and only needed 2.

  24. Thank you. I like the finished result just bummed it wasn't what I was going for.

  25. The end result of this is lovely! It's just so pretty! I'm thinking about interlocking hearts and it is already kinda difficult to picture the technique in my head, let alone execute the idea, so I totally understand ;)
